Ancient Order of Hibernians

About the AOH

The Ancient Order of Hibernians is America’s oldest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization founded concurrently in the coal-mining region of Pennsylvania and New York City in May,1836. The Order can trace its roots back to a series of similar societies that existed in Ireland for more than 300 years. Today the AOH exists in America, Canada, Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland, however, while the organizations share a common thread, the American AOH is a separate and much larger organization.

We invite all Catholics of Irish birth or descent to seek admittance to the FINEST Irish Catholic Organization in the World — all we would ask is for you to live our motto of: “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity”.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in the USA is to promote Irish culture, support the Catholic Church, and foster Christian charity. Grounded by its motto of Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity, it is America's oldest lay Catholic, Irish-American fraternal organization.

Friendship

Building lifelong connections, camaraderie, and mutual support among members.

Members view friendship as more than just a social club; it is an active, supportive brotherhood.

Mutual Support: Brothers provide assistance in times of need, from lending a vehicle to supporting families during times of grief.

Shared Heritage: It fosters camaraderie among men who share pride in their Irish ancestry and a commitment to preserving Catholic values and Irish culture.

Fraternal Networking: Dating back to their origins as a benevolent society in the 19th century, this friendship extends to helping fellow members find employment and navigating the challenges of their local communities.

Unity

Standing together to preserve and promote Irish culture.

Irish Sovereignty: A core goal of the AOH constitution is to aid and advance the endeavors of the Irish people toward complete and absolute independence, promoting a peaceful, just, and united Ireland.

Brotherhood & Community: It emphasizes the connection between Irish Catholics, creating a sense of solidarity where members support one another, welcome new immigrants, and foster loyalty to their local communities.

Cultural Preservation: Unity binds members together in preserving, protecting, and promoting Irish history, language, arts, and traditions in the United States.

Christian Charity

Within the Hibernian brotherhood, this principle translates into several core actions:

Loving One Another: Practicing the Golden Rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Selfless Service: Rising to the challenge of actively aiding the sick, the distressed, and the less fortunate in the local community.

Active Philanthropy: Fulfilling the mandate to give back by participating in fundraising and volunteer efforts.
